Our Story

BEEA honey with heart is a youth-led community investment project where participants (ages 12 - 17 years) are responsible for managing beehives, ensuring the wellbeing of the bees and educating their community on the importance of bees on a global level. With the help of Family SOS staff and community partners the youth are developing a sustainable project that involves setting up apiaries in three community gardens that reside in at risk communities in the Halifax Regional Municipality. We have hives located in the Greystone Community of Spryfield and in Dartmouth North at the Guy Jacobs Community Garden. We are currently working towards building an apiary in North End Halifax.

Youth will be maintaining and harvesting food from the community garden plots and collecting honey from the hives. The honey harvested will be packaged and sold by the youth to local customers. Youth are learning concepts around the importance of hard work, community, environment and sustainable food.  BEEA honey with heart is teaching youth participants entrepreneurial skills, leadership skills and mentoring skills, while building self-confidence, creating a sense of belonging and enabling youth to feel empowered.

All proceeds raised through the sale of our honey goes back into the project.

The BEEA Youth Executive Council (YEC) is made up of 4 youth from each community where the hives are located. Through the program the YEC attend workshops related to beekeeping and operating a small business. These workshops including Beekeeping 101, marketing techniques, presentation skills, sales training and budgeting. They also facilitate workshops for the community on beekeeping and the importance of the honey bee to our society. As part of the program the YEC also attend local community events and festivals to increase their visibility in the community.

Let's Learn Some Valuable Social Enterprise Skills

In December 2015, a few of our youth participants from the BEEA honey with heart Project had the opportunity to meet with past Courage to Give Back Awards Ambassadors. We wanted them to meet leaders in our community that were not only successful in their business but also are great examples of giving back to their community. The youth visited each of the Ambassadors place of business to discuss the social enterprise, ask questions and receive advice. The site visits were a success and our youth learned something new from each Ambassador. We later interviewed each of the youth to see what they learned from the experience.

Here is a little peek of that day and the valuable information youth from the BEEA honey with heart Project received to help with their social enterprise.
