Family Reunification

Family SOS believes that families are the best place to raise children.

However, there are some circumstances in which children do need to be removed from their family homes and placed in the care of child welfare (Children and Family Services Act) or youth custodial facilities (Youth Criminal Justice Act).  Successful reintegration of these children back into their families requires good, comprehensive in-care plans and thorough post/after-care supports and follow up services.  Without appropriate after-care support, children and youth frequently return to care or begin the cycle of group home placement, youth custodial facilities and homelessness.  This instability can make high-risk children and adolescents even more vulnerable to criminal involvement, substance misuse, school/academic failure, sexual promiscuity and an unsuccessful transition into adulthood and independence.

Our Family Reunification/Aftercare Program offers parent education, parent and child counseling, family mediation, advocacy, referrals to other agencies or community programs, and case management services. All of this is aimed at supporting children and youth and their families before, during and after they are reunited.  Early contact with families allows for better case planning preparation and for intervention measures to be put in place which can support the transition back to home.
