It is most humbling to learn about the incredible adversity the honorees have overcome. I have been completely inspired by being involved in this fantastic annual event. It is a great way to begin the year”.

In 2004, Fred Connors purchased a vacant bank building in a marginalized area in north end Halifax where crime rates were high and empty storefronts abounded. He combined his talents and passion to create Fred. beauty food art, a combined salon, restaurant, and art gallery. He believed that by creating an affordable luxury destination in an underappreciated neighbourhood, other businesses would follow. And they did. “Adversity is an opportunity to move forward, learn and accomplish something new,” says Connors. As a leading entrepreneur on an international level and within his own community, Fred founded the Commons North Business and Cultural Association and works on an ongoing basis with other associations and with the municipal government. He continues to have a valuable impact on the economic growth of his community. Fred has been a keen advocate for several community organizations, including Adsum House, Leave Out ViolencE, Stepping Stone, and Phoenix Youth. He holds weekly breakfast meetings with teenage girls to discuss confidence-building and anti-bullying initiatives. Fred is also an active supporter of Family SOS, an organization dedicated to helping children in the HRM. He has worked hands-on with Family SOS program participants, inspiring them with the awareness that they too can become successful in the face of adversity. |
